Malaka
Dating all the way back to the 14th century, The Historic City, Malaka, boasts a rich history that adds wealth to the very pavements and rivers that run through it.
As part and the oldest of the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malaka, Malaka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initially founded by Parameswara, the Sumatran Prince and Leader of Singapura between 1389 and 1398, Malaka changed hands to eventually become the Malaka Sultanate. This establishment and practical trade location drew the attention of merchants far and wide, from within South East Asia, East Asia and beyond; through to the Middle East, and eventually, to Europe. The intention of the Portuguese specifically, was to dominate the Asian trade route. This intention was shared by many, Asian and European alike. As naval, and trade dominance of one territory subsided, so did another’s dominance grow. Ultimately, this lead to many a conflict, and the change of ownership from one hand to another. Like in many parts of the world, the dominance of the seas and the trade centers that connected them was by the colonial powers and in Malaka’s case specifically, the powers of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British.
In 1963, after centuries of colonial squabbling, and then the atrocities of World War, like the rest of Malaysia, Malaka was returned to the people. In 2008, along with George Town in Penang, Malaka was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Now Malaka is famous for its beautiful architecture, art, idyllic winding roads and rivers, beautiful people and some of the most amazing food one can have. We look forward to sharing this rich experience with our students.
Students will be staying in the Amverton Heritage Resort
