A Learning Community that Empowers Students to Achieve their Academic and Life Potential.

Elementary School

Caring Environment

A low adult to child ratio in each class ensures our students receive individual focus and greater attention. This means our staff truly get to know these students and have a thorough understanding of their development, well-being, and safety.

Learning Through Inquiry

We provide students with rich learning tasks that engage them as critical and creative thinkers who have opportunities to apply their knowledge and understanding of real-world problems and issues.

Language Support and Development

English
English Language Learning and Learning Support specialist teachers work alongside homeroom teachers to ensure all students have varied and consistent opportunities to access, engage, and express their understanding.

World Language Pathways
There are three options for students to develop their World Language Skills from Kindergarten through to Graduation. These include Bahasa, Mandarin for native speakers, and Mandarin for language acquisition.

Creative Thinking Skills

Elementary students at RAS have many opportunities to develop as creative and critical thinkers in their homeroom classes and with specialist teachers for Music, Visual Arts, and Physical Education. Information Technology is used throughout the learning program to ensure that our students use technology tools in creative, innovative, and purposeful ways as responsible digital citizens

Elementary Curriculum Overview

Our Elementary School students focus on key language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Numeracy is emphasized daily as students work to gain a balance between concepts and procedures while developing sound mathematical practices. All subjects are instructed with a student-centered approach of practical hands-on learning. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.

A Word From Our Elementary Principal

Welcome to the Elementary School at RAS. We are a community that is committed to working in partnership with parents to develop each child. Our dedicated team of teachers and support staff are committed to fostering academic excellence through an educational program that focuses on building strong language skills and opportunities for our students to inquire, engage and express their learning in different ways.

Learning in the Elementary School at RAS is challenging, and we support our students to achieve their best in all that they do. Pastoral care is a critical element of our Elementary program; our teachers care about our students developing learning environments where children feel confident and achieve their full potential.

We look forward to welcoming your family to the Elementary School here at RAS.

– Mrs. Anita McCallum

Elementary Curriculum:

As a key element of working with parents to develop the ‘whole child,’ the following themes are developed throughout the year through a whole school focus. Core activities include shared reading, assemblies, and student-initiated activities and outreach projects.

  • Caring
  • Responsibility
  • Inclusiveness
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Courage

Core subjects: Core subjects are taught by the Homeroom teacher.

Common Core standards guide our teaching in Mathematics. They include both: Practice Standards: problem-solving, communicating reasoning, and modeling mathematics. Content Standards: Counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, number and operations – fractions, measurement and data, and geometry.

Learning experiences are designed to develop conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Students learn Mathematical concepts by using manipulatives and drawings to make sense and construct their understanding. Students are encouraged to think of multiple strategies to solve problems and explain their thinking both in writing and orally.

The foundation of our ES Literacy program is built upon the English Language Arts Common Core standards. These standards emphasize the key areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, and language foundations. Learning opportunities are differentiated in order to make learning experiences accessible and engaging.

Kinder – Grade 5 students receive a balanced literacy approach that provides authentic reading and writing experiences with targeted instruction. The balanced literacy approach ensures that all students have explicit instruction, opportunities to work on their independent levels, scaffolding, and feedback from teachers, and collaborative interactions with peers.

English Language Learner (ELL) support teachers and Learning Support (LS) teachers collaborate with Homeroom specialist teachers to provide differentiated and additional support for students to be fully supported in accessing, engaging, and expressing their learning.

The ES Science program has been designed using the Next Generation Science Standards. Through hands-on learning activities, students develop an understanding of how to think and work like a scientist. They ask questions and solve problems; they conduct investigations and then discuss and interpret the data. They use different ways to explain their thinking to others.

The ES Social Studies program utilizes the AERO standards. As students learn about their community and the world around them, they are supported to

  1. Develop Questions and Plan Inquiries
  2. Evaluate the Credibility of the Sources and Relevance of the Information to the Inquiry
  3. Construct Coherent, Reasoned Arguments and Explanations
  4. Communicate Conclusions From an Inquiry
  5. Take Informed Action for the Common Good

All PreK – Grade 4 classes are equipped with iPads and Chromebooks to be used by students as tools to engage in learning and express their understanding. In Grade 5, all students are expected to bring their own Macbook.

Technology is integrated into learning across all subject areas and is supported by our Integration Specialist, who collaborates with homeroom and specialist teachers to use technology in meaningful ways.

Starting in Grade 2, each student has access to their own RAS email account. Starting in Grade 3, students begin to use Google Apps for Education.

Students in our Elementary EIP group also participate in classes with all specialist teachers.

“I like Raffles American School more than any other school because of all my new friends and the great teachers we have.  Also I get to learn a lot about other people and their cultures, and they have a lot of fun activities for our family to do together. “
