College Counselor

JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview

The College Counselor leads the Raffles American School team in guiding students and parents through the complex college planning and application process. The role requires strong relationships with students, parents, faculty, principals, fellow college counselors, and college admissions officers.

 

Key Responsibilities

College & Career Program

  • Develop and implement a yearly program that builds trust with students and parents
  • Provide course registration guidance aligned with college and career goals
  • Lead workshops for students, parents, and faculty on college planning and readiness
  • Coordinate college admissions visits to RAS
  • Develop protocols for essay writing, personal statements, and letters of recommendation
  • Provide guidance on standardized tests and college entrance requirements
  • Regularly meet with students and parents to assess progress and adjust plans

College Application Process

  • Support students and parents in the college search and selection process
  • Assist with completing college applications, including essays and recommendation letters
  • Provide guidance on financial aid and scholarship opportunities

Student Support

  • Counsel students on academic, social, and personal matters
  • Work with students, parents, and faculty to manage stress during the application process
  • Facilitate workshops on college applications and decision-making

Liaison & Communications

  • Maintain strong relationships with college admissions officers
  • Communicate regularly with parents and teachers about college planning
  • Stay updated on admissions trends and policies
  • Actively participate in International ACAC

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain student records and transcripts
  • Organize and coordinate college visits and events

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in counseling or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in college counseling
  • Strong ability to build trusting relationships with students, parents, and educators
  • Experience designing and implementing multi-year college counseling programs
  • In-depth knowledge of college admissions in key destination countries
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Knowledge of financial aid and scholarship opportunities
  • Fluency in English (Mandarin and Korean preferred)
  • Willingness to work extended hours during peak college application periods

Reporting Structure

  • Reports to the Secondary School Principal and Superintendent
