Culture and Community: Sukan Rakyat Johor in Kota Iskandar
NOVEMBER 21, 2024
Sukan Rakyat Johor (Johor’s Folk Sports) is more than just a celebration of games—it’s a tribute to unity, cultural heritage, and the timeless traditions that define the vibrant spirit of Johor. This annual event revives traditional village games, fostering camaraderie and connecting modern generations to their roots in a spirit of inclusivity and fun.
The day was filled with excitement and discovery as students engaged in a variety of traditional games, including:
- Traditional Archery: Testing their focus and skill.
- Batu Seremban (Five Stones): A dexterity game that brought smiles and quick hands.
- Congkak (Mancala): A test of strategy and patience.
- Tarik Upih: A thrilling ride on coconut leaves, reminiscent of simpler times.
- Sepak Raga Bulatan: Showcasing teamwork in this traditional version of takraw.
Rather than focusing on competition, the event emphasized the joy of participation, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and shared experiences. For our students, it was not only an opportunity to learn new skills but also to develop a deeper appreciation for Johor’s rich traditions and cultural values
Sukan Rakyat Johor serves as a bridge between generations and cultures, preserving Johor’s vibrant heritage while fostering lasting connections among participants. Events like these remind us of the importance of cultural preservation, ensuring that traditions continue to inspire and unite future generations.
At Raffles American School, we’re proud to play a part in celebrating and supporting initiatives that enrich the community and nurture a love for cultural heritage in our students.
