A Learning Community that Empowers Students to Achieve their Academic and Life Potential.

Today, some of our Grade 9 students were investigating the function of enzymes through experimentation of washing up liquid and foods then attributing this to their structure, including the specifically shaped active site.

Do you know that milk contains lipids and proteins? The different enzymes in washing up liquid weakens the chemical bonds between the fatty acids and glycerol in lipids and the bonds between the amino acids in the protein through an enzyme-substrate complex. In the experiment, the students noticed the soap was attached to the milk and the mixture of colours, which emphasises the speedy action of enzymes due to the natural collision theory.
