Swim Fun Day

Our ES Swim Fun Day definitely turned out to be a lot of fun!
We were lucky that the bad weather stayed away at the right time and allowed our ES students to participate in a program of extremely interesting and sometimes challenging events. The ES was divided into 2 large group sessions with PreK, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 in the pool from 8:20 until 9:20, and then our Grade 2 to 5 students took to the water from 11:00 am until just after 12 noon.
Mr. Andy’s Grade 6 PE students were also on hand and did an awesome job of guiding and assisting the ES students throughout the day. Once again we saw RAS students displaying some outstanding leadership qualities.
Ms. Jess did an amazing job as always warming up the students with some movement to music in the pool. ‘I can do it, you can do it, we all can do it, SCREAM!!’ was so much fun, as was the following large group game of ‘Crocodile Tag’. (Not real crocodiles!)
Then we split into class groups and did a 3 station rotation which consisted of; 1. Treasure Hunt and Toss, 2. Noodle Races, 3. Raft Races and Walk the Plank.
In the later session, we had a slightly different format for our older and larger group of Grade 2 to 5 students.
We began in a similar fashion with the move to music warm-up and then we played ‘Jellyfish Tag’. (Not real jellyfish!)
Our program then switched to races across the pool in class groups. We did running, horse (noodle) races, raft (mat) races, kickboard relays, and then our 25m Freestyle Championship Race. This was open to all students who had demonstrated they could swim freestyle with good technique for at least 25m without stopping. After a number of heats, the fastest 8 swimmers raced off in the Final. Our ES 25m Freestyle Champion for 2022 was Shunto Tachibana followed very closely in 2nd by Bertie Taylor and Grade 3 swimmer Brooklyn Friedrichs in 3rd.
The 8 ‘finalists’ then competed in a Freestyle Relay against the RAS Staff team led by Ms. Anita. The Grade 6 assistants also had a team racing. It was very close for most of the legs but a strong finishing staff team pulled away towards the end to take the ‘Gold’. The ES team wasn’t far behind in the ‘Silver Medal’ position with Grade 6 coming in 3rd.
The ES Swim Fun Day was a great way to end our swimming program for this school year. We look forward to more swimming in Terms 3 and 4 of next year’s classes. Thank you for your support of our programs.

Kindergarten Cafe

This term Kindergarten has been learning about the difference between needs and wants. They have inquired into how we earn money to get the things we need. As part of this unit of study, the Kindergarten children created a “Kindergarten Cafe” with snacks and treats they had prepared themselves. They set up all the tables, created signs, and took on the job roles and responsibilities of employees at a Cafe. Some children were Greeters, others Waiters, some Chefs, some Servers, and some on the Cashier desk. The parents came along, ordered food from the Menus that the children had written themselves, and enjoyed the Kindergarten Cafe atmosphere. The students did a wonderful job serving the parents and learning some valuable life skills about working hard and earning money.

Nictar Pineapple Park

May 24, 2022

The 4th grade students visited Nictar Pineapple Park in Pekan Nanas as part of the culmination of their Production, Distribution, Consumption unit. At the farm, the students learned about how pineapples are produced, processed, and converted into various products. They were also able to make pineapple cookies and jam, which they enjoyed snacking on after a long day picking fruit and learning. Additionally, the founder and owner of Nictar farm also gave a brief lesson on sustainability and the eco-friendly aspects of the compound. The main building is made of recycled materials and utilizes natural air ventilation, the leftover plant parts are composted, they have multiple hydroponic setups, and they use packaging that is easily recyclable. All in all the students had a fun, educational, and scrumptious experience!

4th Grade Video Advertisements

May 19, 2022

The 4th graders worked together to create video advertisements for products they made at home. These products are all unique but serve one uniform purpose – to improve the lives of students and teachers! In conjunction with the video, they also wrote persuasive articles and created eye-catching posters to attract consumers and investors. As a culmination of the project, all of the students’ hard work was added to a class website showcasing their products. They will also receive teacher and peer feedback on their creations via digital surveys.  After the feedback period, a link to the completed websites will be posted here on News Desk.

May 11, 2022

Teaching children to be mindful and focus on their internal feelings allows them to fully experience what they are doing at that moment and can have a lasting effect on what, how, and why they learn. Learning to sit, stand and walk without distractions and to focus on the moment is a gradual process that has immense benefits for children.

International Authors Visit

May 6, 2022

Poetry Rocks! Grades Kindergarten – 5th grade had the pleasure of working with published authors, Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger, today. They read poems to us, got us up and participating in performance poems, and they gave us writing tips. To top off the session, students were invited to share some of their own poems and were given feedback from the authors! One of the most important tips they gave was” Read an extra 20 minutes every night, and you will be smarter!” They started writing poems because they loved to read, and their poetry writing made them better writers and communicators in all aspects of life. What a great day with the authors!

Supply Chain Activity

April 28, 2022

In 4B, students worked together to create a supply chain network for a sandwich shop. After reading about their available resources, the raw materials that they must seek, and the buyers that they need to find, the students set off to find their relevant connections. At first, they struggled to stay together as they attempted to find their next customer/supplier, leaving behind the customer/supplier they just met, but they quickly caught on and agreed with one another to stay in the same parts of the room. The activity was a fun and energetic dissection of a supply chain and the logistics behind finding suppliers, customers, consumers, and laborers.

Masked Singer Winner Announced!

April 19, 2022

Congratulations to our courageous participants in the Elementary Masked Singer competition! This was the idea of one of our Grade 5 students and was open for children in Grades 3-5 to enter.

These children showed they can put their GLOs into action, they researched, communicated, and managed their time and deadlines as part of the competition. They persisted if something was hard, they were resilient and gracious if they didn’t make it to the final round. We are incredibly proud of them all and how independent they were in this process.

4B Science Experiment

31st March 2022

In science class, 4B students observed ice cubes made with red, blue, and green food dye in jars of water. Obviously, the ice melted, but the food coloring allowed them to see something interesting happen…convection! The cold water that came from the melting ice cube sank straight down, exhibiting how colder air and liquids move downwards. But as that cold water was warmed by the surrounding water, it slowly started to rise up again! Eventually, the food dye from the melted ice cube spread around the whole jar as the water temperature equalized.  Temperature affects density because colder molecules stay closer to each other and move less whereas warmer particles spread out and move more!

PreK Music Class

31st March 2022

Parachutes and music lessons go hand in hand with each other; they help students respond to music physically, mark out phrases, keep the beat and explore structure. PreK used the parachute to show the high and low pitches in different songs, they then used it to move along with some traditional folk songs and classical music. Using the parachute also helps students to develop their listening skills and their teamwork skills – it helps that it’s a lot of fun too!

4th Grade Science

17th March 2022

In science, the 4th graders are learning about the law of conservation of energy – energy cannot be created or destroyed. So why don’t paper airplanes fly forever? Well air resistance and gravity, that’s why! During the activity, the students discovered that planes with a greater surface area had more air resistance, which could help them fly longer. Planes with narrower bodies flew faster and sometimes farther, but not nearly as long as others. This is due to the friction between the paper and air (air resistance), which leads to an energy transfer from the plane to the air!

International Day of Mathematics

14th March 2022

Today we celebrated International Day of Mathematics in the ES.
The theme of the day this year was “Mathematics Unites” so we united in different ways to celebrate and promote Mathematics.

We united as a class to solve a mystery problem. There were swimming ducks and lollipops or M&Ms challenges. We used our problem-solving skills to work together to find answers and we were communicators by explaining our Mathematical thinking.

We united as an Elementary school to help Cahaya Surya Bakti school raise money to repair their school bus through a coin line competition. We made coin lines with all the coins donated by families, Grade 4B made the longest coin line and was declared the winning class!

We united as the WHOLE school from PreK to Grade 12 through a number doodle on a giant number line in the cafeteria.

Mini-Roller Coasters!

10th March 2022

Grade 4B students created mini-roller coasters to experiment with potential and kinetic energy. They discovered that, when two marbles had potential energy, they were both able to make it into the goal! After the formal experimenting was done, the students were free to modify their tracks and experiment even more. Some of us even used our own potential (energy) to add a twist to our tracks! Marbles were flying around the room, but such is the joy of experimentation!

5th Graders Interview Cahaya Surya Bakt

9th March 2022

Today Grade 5 interviewed Ms. Lulu from Cahaya Surya Bakt, a learning center here in JB that supports Rohingyan refugees.
Grade 5 students were great inquirers, they asked excellent questions to learn more about the organization and how our students in Elementary can connect and help them. Many of them were very surprised to realize that many children who were the same age as our Gr 5 students were only starting school for the first time this year. They were interested to hear how the school works with the UNHCR to help these families.
Here is a sample of the questions they asked…
“What inspired you to do this work?”
“How do you raise awareness for refugees?”
“How many people are you able to help? How many people need more help?”
“Where do the teachers come from? Do they get paid or are they all volunteers?”
“Are you planning on expanding your school? Expanding in other countries?”
Next week we will donate all the money raised in the coin lines to help them with transport for their students. We are looking forward to more opportunities for Grade 5 lead initiatives to support this school.

Grade 4B Taste Experiment

30th September 2021

Grade 4B is focusing on how sensory organs allow us to sense smells and tastes. The taste buds in our tongue, which collects food molecules and sends taste information to our brain, require saliva in order to function properly. We did an experiment where we removed saliva from our tongues and tried to taste food. The result? We couldn’t really taste anything! Miraculously, as soon as you taste a drink of water or begin chewing, the taste of the food returns. Saliva isn’t just for show . . . it’s an integral part of our taste-sensing abilities!

Getting Ready for International Week!

21st September 2021

International Week will be celebrated at RAS from 27 September through to 1 October. This week is an opportunity for our community to celebrate the different cultural groups within our school and learn more about how we are the same and also what makes each of us unique.

Throughout the week in the Elementary we will be learning more about the different cultural communities our friends belong to, where we are all from, different cultures customs, and practices. We will be making connections in all areas of the curriculum as well as special learning experiences in Music, Art, and Library.

On Friday 1 October, all students and staff are asked to dress in clothing from their home country, this can be a national dress or simply something to represent where you are from such as a hat.

We are asking families to get involved too and help us learn how to say ‘hello’ in everyone’s Mother Tongue language so we can learn to greet one another in different ways. We are asking families to help us with this by recording themselves saying hello on the Flipgrid link and explaining where their family is from and how the greeting is used. The link is posted on Class Dojo for everyone to access.

Make sure to check the Newsdesk and Instagram next week to see some highlights of International Week.

Curriculum information for parents

At RAS we strongly believe that parents’ involvement in their child’s education is a key factor for student success. Starting when your child joins PreK, we work in partnership with parents in order to focus on helping each child achieve their best. Communication between home and school is vital, this week in the Elementary we shared curriculum flyers via Class Dojo for all homeroom and specialist classes. The purpose of these flyers is to help parents have a greater understanding of what their child will be learning. Homeroom teachers have shared curriculum flyers for the first half of Term 1 with all families. Specialist teachers have shared curriculum flyers for Term 1.

These flyers help parents know different things you can talk to your child about, make sure to read them today and ask your child about what they have been learning so far and discuss what great learning opportunities are coming up this term.

Parent information sessions Friday 27 August

Elementary: 1:30 – 2pm
Secondary: 2:30 – 3 pm

On Friday 27 August we will be holding homeroom parent information sessions. For these sessions, children can join with their parents (as appropriate) via Zoom for a 30-minute meeting. The Zoom link will be added to the class schedule for the week.

During these meetings, the teachers will welcome families to the new year, outline key communication pathways, routines, and curriculum information. If parents have specific questions regarding their children then please make a separate time with the teacher to do this. We will have Chinese speakers in most classes to help with some translation if needed.

Following the meeting, I will share the presentations, curriculum overviews, and video messages from all of your child’s teachers with all families. If you are unable to join your child’s class meeting don’t worry, you will still be able to access all of the information shared by the teachers.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to send me a message so we can work together to help your family.

Grade 2 Summer Vibes Escape Room

10th June 2021
Today many of our ES students were challenged with a ‘summer vibes’ escape room, different grade levels had challenging questions.
“It is the last day of school and you get locked in your classroom! To escape you must work through the problems to find the 10 digit code to escape the room!”
Working in teams they solved problems all based on Language Arts concepts they had learned throughout the year. Here you can see some of our Grade 2 friends revising their knowledge of conjunctions to find the number for that part of the lock. Did your child’s group escape their classroom for the summer? This group made it just in time, they have escaped for the summer holidays ready to join us in August in Grade 3.
